A book celebrating the creativity of Slawa Horowitz-Duldig – artist, designer, teacher and inventor of the modern foldable umbrella – an Austrian/Australian artist whose life and career was so disrupted by the upheaval of the Second World War.

A new monograph that details the renaissance of woman’s achievements, set against 20th century struggles. This book celebrates the creativity of Slawa Horowitz-Duldig – artist, designer, teacher and inventor of the modern foldable umbrella – an Austrian/Australian artist whose life and career was so disrupted by the upheaval of the Second World War. Slawa’s story is told through works of art, rare photographs and archival material sourced from the Duldig Studio museum in Melbourne – home of a creative couple, Slawa and her husband, distinguished sculptor Karl Duldig.  Slawa gained recognition for her patented design of the modern foldable umbrella that she conceived when she was 27 in 1928 Vienna.  Her umbrella had a simplified folding mechanism that she patented, manufactured and sold throughout Europe. With royalties that she received from the foldable umbrella she designed and commissioned a suite of modernist furniture, but she was forced to sell the rights when she fled the Nazis.  The family’s furniture and artwork was recovered after the war and resides at eh Duldig Studio – museum + sculpture Garden, a public museum set in the artists’ former home in East Malvern.

This is her story, one of determination to create, not only art, but a museum which would be a legacy for us all.
