Brummel’s Café, terracotta, 1980

‘Brummel’s Café’ was created in the later years of Karl Duldig’s life from terracotta clay. It is a symmetrical, structural piece set on a flat, rectangular base, depicting two people sitting opposite each other at a table. The legs of the stools and the figures’ arms are simply rolled pieces of clay. The bodies have been filled out with small pieces of clay that remain clearly visible.

Look closely at this piece when you visit the exhibition.
Note the shapes that are created by the composition of the figures and the furniture. Discuss the way the clay has been used. Compare this sculpture with others in the exhibition that are also made from terracotta – can you see any differences in the way this material has been applied and in its appearance in the finished product?

Think about the figures and the way they are composed. Describe the composition of the sculpture.

What clues does the title of the piece give you about what the figures may be doing? Create stories about what you think this piece may be about.
